About Montreal Centre
Montreal is the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province and is the second-largest city in that country. It is an island at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River to the south, the Riviere des Prairies to the north, and the Ottawa River. Montreal gets its name from its most distinctive geographical landmark, Mount Royal, and is home to Royal Park, designed by New York Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted. The city’s climate is often described as “humid continental,” with warm muggy summers and cold snowy winters sporting temperature that often dip below 0° F.
Native peoples are believed to have occupied the island for some 2,000 years before the first European settlers arrived. The first fur trading post was built on the island in 1611 and in 1639 Montreal was brought into New France as a colony. The French maintained Montreal as a colony until it was lost to the British in 1760 in the Seven Years war. It was finally incorporated into Canada as a city in 1832.
The city is home to 1.6 million people and has long been a leading financial and cultural center in North America. Montreal is split geographically and culturally by Saint Laurent Boulevard (the Maine). The city’s streets are numbered east west from this starting point and it has historically marked the divide between the British sphere to the west and the French to the east. At the southern end of the Maine is Vieux Montreal, or Old Montreal, which has held on to its distinctive architecture and cobble-stoned streets. The city’s original fortifications are also found in Old Montreal, as are some of Montreal’s oldest buildings. The rest of the city’s nineteen boroughs are composed of diverse neighborhoods bearing the influence of over 80 countries.
Montreal is also a city upon a city. Beneath the streets and sidewalks is the RESO, or La Ville Souterrain, the world’s most extensive underground complex of pedestrian and transportation networks. A person could spend an entire winter in Montreal without ever having to brave the elements. Its 62 Metro stations that connect the city are all architecturally unique and were each built by a different designer.
Montreal is a city distinctive for its international character, unique architecture, and vibrant cultural life. It is a jewel of North America and a required travel destination.
